THAT’S RIGHT: IT’S TIME TO I.T.C.H.!
(Because the internet is not a place for subtlety, no, that’s not really what we’re going to call these updates)
ANYWAY—it’s that time of the month already, so here are some of the things we’re excited about from the Independent1 solicitations for this month.
Image solicitations!
Convert #1
The pitch for this in the Image solicits is pretty bare bones, but I read the preview2 they had on the Lunar website and OOH boy. From what I can tell of the first issue, this is going to be The Martian meets Hatchet but on an alien world flush with life.
COMIC BOOK HYPE AWARD: Power Fantasy #1
Kieron Gillen (Wicked + the Divine, Die, Immortal X-Men, A.X.E. Judgment Day) writes, Caspar Wijngaard on interiors.
Issue #1 starts with a conversation between two Superpowered3 people over pizza—the subject of their conversation?
Whether or not they have a moral obligation to take over the planet.
The art is phenomenal, the story is excellent. If you’re like me and you miss Immortal X-men4, this is going to scratch that itch.
BOOM! solicitations
So Ram V’s Rare Flavours just ended last month. I don’t know about you, but this book is right up there with The Many Deaths of Laila Starr. Boom announced the trade-paperback release of this book and I KNOW for a fact not enough of you read this when it was coming out in single issues.
So you’d better get the trade
or else.
Want to know what it’s about? A rakshasa (a demon from Hinduism) hires a young filmmaker to make an Anthony-Bourdain-style travel documentary about food all across India. Oh, and also he eats people.
Red Before Black #1
Writer Stephanie Philips on Red Before Black:
“For me, Florida is like that relative that you make fun of but become defensive about the minute you hear someone else making fun of them. I grew up there…I’ve been chased by water moccasins, had to call someone about alligator removals, thrown more than one hurricane party, and dressed like a pirate for the annual invasion of Tampa’s bay. There is truly no better place I could think of to set Red Before Black–a weird crime story with an even weirder setting. Val and Leo might be our main characters, but Florida is ever present and Goran truly draws the s*** outta this curious place that will forever feel like home for me, no matter where I live.”
S.I.R. #1
This four-issue mini by Fell Hound5 is a romance story about JOUSTING ON MOTORCYCLES, OKAY? I shouldn’t have to write more than that.
“My favorite genre on the planet is romantic dueling in the likes of Revolutionary Girl Utena and Gundam: The Witch from Mercury. So naturally that manifests itself into re-imagining Fight Club as a 90s shojo anime on motorbikes!” said series creator, Fell Hound. “S.I.R. is a story about fighting for true love in the motorcycle combat ring, while fending off your inner demons with the blazing headlights of genuine human connection. I’m so excited to be working with Ele, Becca, and Elizabeth to bring this book to life!” - Fell Hound at Boom
Last thing!
Farscape Anniversary Special
Have you watched Farscape?
I haven’t.
I’ve heard it’s good—Anna says so.
Look, I’m so behind on TV. I just barely caught up on The Boys, haven’t started Acolyte. If it isn’t Doctor Who or one of those two things, it isn’t even on my radar right now. Also, I’m supposed to get back to SG-1 at some point.
Anyway, comic book:
Anyway, be sure to pre-order this if you want it! I promise I’ll get to watching the show at some point.
ok, Marvel/DC previews post probably next week.

To be clear, Independent just means not Marvel or DC. Is that an accurate description of the state of the industry? I don’t know. Is it easier than trying to do these with the 1,000,000 new #1s from Marvel and DC in every catalog? Yes.
PLEASE other comics publishers, do this! Getting a sense for the dialog writing + tone + artstyle has made this book go from a tentative handful of copies on pre-order to a much higher number and that’s only possible because I got to read those preview pages. 10/10.
In this book Superpowered means specifically a person with power equivalent to the United States’s nuclear arsenal. There are 6 of them on earth.
AND AGAIN I SAY HOW DARE YOU END KRAKOA, MARVEL? HOW DARE YOU.
What a cool name for a comic book writer.
